$92.8M Defense Boost Javelin and Excalibur Mark New Era in US-India Arms Partnership

$92.8M Defense Boost The approval from the U.S. State Department, notified through the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), clears the way for India to acquire two highly advanced military systems.

1. šŸ›”ļø Javelin Missile System

  • The FGM-148 Javelin is a man-portable, “fire-and-forget” anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) system.
  • Key Capability: It uses an infrared seeker to lock onto a target and can execute a top-attack profile, striking the most vulnerable part of a tank (the top armor). This makes it highly effective against advanced armored threats.
  • The Package: The deal includes 100 FGM-148 Javelin rounds, one “fly-to-buy” missile, and 25 Lightweight Command Launch Units (CLUs), along with training, simulation rounds, and technical support.
  • Value: Approximately $45.7 million of the total deal.

2. šŸŽÆ Excalibur Precision Projectiles

  • The M982A1 Excalibur is a 155mm, GPS-guided artillery projectile used by howitzer cannons, like the M777 ultra-light howitzers India already fields.
  • Key Capability: It provides precision-guided fire at extended ranges (up to 40-70 km depending on the cannon). Its accuracy minimizes collateral damage, which is crucial in sensitive operational areas.
  • The Package: India has requested up to 216 Excalibur tactical projectiles, along with related equipment like Portable Electronic Fire Control Systems and technical assistance.
  • Value: Approximately $47.1 million of the total deal.
